Case 2-1 Carson Container Company Essay Example
Case 2-1 Carson Container Company Essay Case Questions 1. What problems does Carson Container Company have that will affect its communications? Carsonââ¬â¢s decentralized approach to procurement was indicative of its overall strategy toward dealing with its constituencies including employees, customers, shareholders, and communities. This decentralized strategy has affected the Carsonââ¬â¢s communications. 2. What specific problems does Mr. Haskell have as a result of his communications to materials managers? As a result of Mr. Haskellââ¬â¢s communications to materials managers, over the next few days, responses came in from all but a few plants. However, over the next several weeks, the headquarters heard nothing from the plants about contracts being negotiated with suppliers. Mr. Haskellââ¬â¢s initiative to centralize the companyââ¬â¢s procurement procedures was not implemented successfully, and the usual procedures for that time of year continued. 3. How would you analyse this case in terms of the expanded corporate communication strategy framework (Figure 2. 2)? The expanded corporate communication strategy framework has four important elements such as messages, organization, constituencies, and constituency responses. I would analyse this case from the 4 perspectives as the following: (a)Messages: The communication channel used by Mr. Haskell is memo and sent to 30 plant material managers. Carson as a large regional manufacturer in the United States, I think memo is not effective and strong enough to convey this important message to 30 plants. Furthermore, the decentralized and uncoordinated procurement procedures of the company has been carried for a long time, hence when Mr. Haskell intended to do a revolution, it will be more difficult. (b)Organization: The Carson and Mr. Haskell wanted to centralize the companyââ¬â¢s procurement procedures and reduce the number of suppliers overall. The resources or Carson such as money, human resources and time needed to be considered during the implementation of the new procurement process. However, Mr. Haskell did not put consideration on the human resources and time dealing with this new procurement process. The Carson has 30 plants and many employees under procurement department; hence, it is not wise to have Mr. Haskell himself and his assistant, Patricia only to deal with the 30 plant material managers. Apparently, the human resource arrangement is not enough on this matter. Besides, the time chose to run this new procurement process was not appropriate because the time chose was the busiest period for procurement department, hence they would easily neglected the new procurement process. Therefore, the objective of the Carson and Mr. Haskell could not be achieved effectively because the company did not do appropriate arrangement on the human resource and time arrangement. (c)Constituencies: The constituencies in this case are the 30 plants material managers located in United States regionally. Hence, the attitude of the 30 managers towards this topic is relatively important. However, the results showed that the managers were too busy and they did not put much concerns on this matter. Hence, the objective of Mr. Haskell was not achieved at the end. From this we could see that Mr. Haskell did not analyse its constituencies carefully. He did not understand the material managersââ¬â¢ attitude and opinion towards the new procurement process. He failed in understanding and analysing the constituenciesââ¬â¢ attitude, feelings and opinions which resulted in his failure of implementing the new procurement process. (d)Constituency responses: The constituency did not respond in the way the Carson and Mr. Haskell wished and they did not concern about the matter. The communication between Mr. Haskell and the constituencies has failed and definitely the objective was not accomplished in a desired manner. 4. What advice would you give Haskell to help solve his and Carsonââ¬â¢s problems? I suggest Haskell to put these things into consideration in order to help solve his and Carsonââ¬â¢s problems: (a)Constituencies and their responses: Haskell should analyse his constituencies including the primary constituencies such as the material managers and employees and also the secondary constituencies such as the suppliers. Specifically, Haskell should at least communicate with the 30 plants material managers to understand and research on their opinions and suggestion towards the new procurement method. He can do a survey or organize a video conference with all the managers to discuss about the topic. From the results of the communication, he could determine whether the new procurement method is a wise method and how he should carry out the new plan. (b)Messages: Haskell should put more efforts on delivering and structuring the message that he intended to send to all the material managers. He should choose multiple channels such as video conference, email, or intranet in order to deliver the message more effectively. A visual communication could be carried in order to increase the possibility and awareness of the constituencies. Besides, he could structure better of the message such as emphasizing the objective strongly and input some sentences that shows the much concern of the board of directors towards the new procurement process. (c)Organization: I suggest Haskell to set up a small committee who accounts for the whole research, implementation, development and evaluation of the new procurement process. This small committee should involve at least four to five professionals to keep track with the project. Hence, the new procurement procedure can be carried and improved in order to meet the objective which is to centralized the procurement procedure and reduce the number of suppliers overall. Besides, the implementation of the new policy should not be allocated at a busy or peak period of the procurement department. They should at least allow one month to each plant to execute the new procedure. Case 2-1 Carson Container Company Essay Example Case 2-1 Carson Container Company Essay Case Questions 1. Soldiers Home Essay Example
Soldiers Home Essay Example Soldiers Home Paper Soldiers Home Paper Soldierââ¬â¢s Home By Ernest Hemingway In the battlefield soldiers are experiencing war, death, loss ââ¬â they kill and watch fellow soldiers getting killed. Being a soldier is in no way an easy life, and it is hard for people, who have not experienced war to understand. When these soldiers returns from war they need to adjust themselves to their old lives ââ¬â adjust themselves to live in a place that has not change a tiny bit, even though they are in no way the same person as they were when they left. The main character in Hemingwayââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"Soldierââ¬â¢s homeâ⬠experiences the conflicts connected with returning from war. What strikes me the most when reading Ernest Hemingway is his style of writing. This short story is characteristic due to the few adjectives, adverbs and Hemingway does not tell us about the charactersââ¬â¢ feelings and thoughts and one must interpret these from actions and conversations. His style is simple, direct and his grammar is almost grade school-like. When first reading the short story one might find the short story in lack of substance due to the missing direct statements and descriptions of emotions. The reader needs to be active to understand Hemingwayââ¬â¢s stories. Harold Krebs went to take part in World War 1 immediately after finishing college. Although World War 1 ended in 1918 Krebs did not return to his hometown before 1919. After his arrival he is not greeted as a war hero like his fellow students. The hysteria was rampant in the area, but at the time he arrives the hysteria has passed. People find it difficult to understand why he returned as late as he did ( people seemed to think it was rather ridiculous for Krebs to be getting back so late, years after the war was over. â⬠(ll. 8-9)). It seems as though Krebs has returned so late, because he has a hard time interacting with ââ¬Å"ordinary peopleâ⬠ââ¬â people who has not experienced the war as he has. At first he does not want to talk about his experiences in the war, but when he feels the need to do it, people do not listen. Due to his desire to talk about it he starts lying to make his stories more interesting. I believe talking is an important part of the ââ¬Å"healing processâ⬠when someone has experienced war ââ¬â Krebs does not like talking to people due to the fact that they do not understand him. He would like to have a girlfriend, but the talking makes him change his mind, ââ¬Å"now he would have liked a girl if she had some to him and not wanted to talk,â⬠(l. 40). His mother pressurizes Krebs to find a girlfriend and she calls attention to the fact that the boys from his old school has settled down and ââ¬Å"on their way to being really a credit to the communityâ⬠(ll. 85-86). To Krebs this is a ââ¬Å"hard slap in the faceâ⬠ââ¬â a veiled critic. The mother is very religious and she does not believe that going to war is the solution to anything ââ¬â she does instead believe that a good job, a nice wife and children are the real ââ¬Å"credit to the communityâ⬠. Furthermore, the mother does not understand that Krebs is no longer like the boys he used to hang out with ââ¬â he has seen death and death changes people. Death has made him incapable of loving something we are shown when the mother asks him ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t you love your mother, dear boy? â⬠(l. 97) and Krebs truthfully answers ââ¬Å"noâ⬠. It was not his intention to hurt his mother, and he ends up promising her that he in fact loves her. This is yet another lie, and he realises that he has to move on. Krebs was once religious (ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ from a Methodist college in Kansas,â⬠(l. 1)) but he has now lost his faith to God and he is no longer ââ¬Å"in His Kingdomâ⬠(l. 4). His faith in religion has faltered due to his experiences in the war. Although he wants to break with the familyââ¬â¢s religious values, but he cannot break with the authority he still feels religion is. Krebs feels sorry for his mother because she (and her religion) has made him lie ââ¬â and made him feel guilty as well (ââ¬Å"He had felt sorry for his mother she had made him lie. He would go to Kansas City and get a job and she would feel all right about itâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (ll. 23-24)). I believe that isolation from society is an important theme in this short story due to the fact that it has such an impact on the main character. During the war Krebs felt important and useful but now no one even wants to listen to his story unless he lies. He has turned into a passive observer ââ¬â he observes the girls walking by, but he does not want to interact with them ââ¬â he just sits on the porch reading. Hemingway wanted the reader to believe that his short storiesââ¬â¢ and novelsââ¬â¢ reflected himself as person. In Soldierââ¬â¢s Home it is obvious that Krebs does not like his mother ââ¬â Hemingway did as well detest his mother. Hemingway was raised in a very religious way but as he grew older he became more rebellious and wanted to break with his former religious believes, just like Krebs.

Legalizing same Sex Marriage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words
Legalizing same Sex Marriage - Essay Example One of the biggest fight in America, is the fight for equality. In the fifties and sixties, black Americans fought for equal rights, and this was one of the longest and most publicized fight since the abolishment of slavery. Today there is a new, tempestuous issue on the horizonââ¬â the legalizing same sex marriage. Before defending the rights of same sex marriage, certain questions must be answered: are gays American citizen; are they humans; and do they pay taxes? The answer to these questions is yes. Then why are they not given equal treatment as other American citizens? Simple, a marriage is the union between a male and a female. And gay are given equal rights. They have all the right of any American citizen, and as soon as they fit the criteria for marriage they will be pronounced married. The debate over whether the state ought to recognize gay marriages has thus far focused on the issue as one of civil rights. Such a treatment is erroneous because state recognition of marriage is not a universal right. States regulate marriage in many ways besides denying men the right to marry men, and women the right to marry women. Roughly half of all states prohibit first cousins from marrying, and all prohibit marriage of closer blood relatives, ...In all states, it is illegal to attempt to marry more than one person, or even to pass off more than one person as oneââ¬â¢s spouse. Some states restrict the marriage of people suffering from syphilis or other venereal diseases. Homosexuals, therefore, are not the only people to be denied the right to marry the person of their choosing (5). Apparently Mr. Kolasinski is not the one one who agrees that gays already has all the right that each American citizen has. Eddie Thompson at AD authorden.com agrees to, he says: First, gay and lesbians already possess rights equally protected under the law. They have the exact rights that I have today. They can marry a member of the opposite sex if they so choose, just like I have done. I can't marry a member of my own sex, even if I wanted to. So, we have the exact same rights. What is being suggested by the gay agenda is not "equal rights" but "extra rights." They want to be allowed to reap the benefits of marriage without actually marrying in its traditional sense. There are many wonderful people who choose to remain single for myriad reasons, and these people are not clamoring for the rights granted to couples who marry. Why should those who refuse traditional marriage be granted such rights simply because they prefer sex with someone whose anatomy r esembles their own? In fact, most of the so-called ââ¬Å"rightsâ⬠married couples have can be obtained through a lawyerââ¬â¢s legal maneuvers. Documents of the United States constitution, Declaration of Independe nt, and the Bill of Rights are testimonies of the freedom enjoy by Americans. Unfortunately, our founding fathers were unaware that they neglected to enact another document, the Bill of Rights for same sex marriage. Had they not been negligence, the new Bill would read thus: The constitution of the United States of America do apologize to the American people for the travesty it is about to commit on the sanctity of marriage. The people of the United States of America must now recognize the union of pf two men or two women, and give it the distinguish name of marriage. The same privilege given to a man and a woman who form a union will now be given to marriages of same sex. A man and a man, or a woman and a woman who chooses to love each other and decides to consummate that love through marriage will be given a legal document testifying to that fact. If such parties choose to, they are allowed to raise

Successful People Essay Example for Free
Successful People Essay To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Stand and Deliver by Ramon Menendez and Thomas Musca are two similar stories where the main characters are both very determined. They both want to make a difference and are both very confident men. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch, the main character, is a white older man that is a lawyer. During the book, he has to defend a black man who was charged with raping a white woman. During that time period, black people were seen by the community as trash and or not important. In Stand and Deliver, Jaime Escalante, the main character, is a Hispanic man that was put into a dangerously diverse school district. He goes to the school as a computer teacher, but the school doesnââ¬â¢t have computers. He then is assigned as a math teacher that has to find a way to teach students that society has assigned them as rejects. There are three similarities with the two main characters of each story. They both are very determined, they both want to make a difference, and they both are very confident. To be a successful person like Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante, you have to be very determined. Atticus Finch shows his determination in the work he does and the quality of work he does. Atticus is especially determined in the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man that was accused of raping a white woman. Atticus Finch went into the trial knowing that he was going to lose because in that time period a black person is convicted of something. Even if they didnââ¬â¢t do it they are guilty. But when he was done with the trial, he didnââ¬â¢t care if he won or lost. All he cared about was that he got the jury to think. Jaime Escalante shows his determination when his fellow teachers tell him he canââ¬â¢t do things. He also shows his determination in teaching his students. He also teaches the community adult school. Jaime is very determined especially when his fellow teachers tell him that the students heââ¬â¢s trying to teach are dumb and stupid and have horrible work ethics. He proves them wrong. He tries teaching the students, which is unheard of by that school. Jaime goes above and beyond on his teaching. He has class during the summer in the schoolââ¬â¢s locker room with no air conditioning and no air movement just to help his students have a better life. He also teaches at the community adult school to allow his fellow aged citizens have a better education and allow them to live a better life and advance in a society that is crumbling. Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante both show that to be a successful person you have to be very determined and have a goal in your life to be successful. To be a successful person like Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante, you have to want to make a difference. Atticus Finch wants to make a difference in his community and in his family. Atticus Finch shows that he wants to make a difference in his community by getting rid of the black versus white going on. ââ¬Å"The colored balcony ran along three walls of the courtroom like a second-story veranda, and from it we could see every-thingâ⬠(164). He shows that he wants to make a difference in his family by getting his family to get rid of the black versus white and also by having his cousin come and stay with them over the summer to teach Scout how to be a lady. Jaime Escalante wants to make a difference in his community and in his students. Jaime shows that he wants to make a difference in his community by teaching students, parents, and older adultââ¬â¢s math and that their community isnââ¬â¢t just about getting a job and having or dealing with racial conflicts, which they can change the community by wanting and trying to learn. He also wants to make a difference in his students by not having them just follow what the other students are doing. The other students didnââ¬â¢t want to learn, were in gangs, and didnââ¬â¢t want their friends to learn. Their friends wanted them to do things that would hurt or ruin their lives, and he succeeds in teaching them that life is not just about a job and what your friends do and to follow them. Itââ¬â¢s not about what your friends think and how you see yourself around your friends. Lifeââ¬â¢s about living life to the fullest. The way you want to do it, and not the way society thinks you should do it. Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante have both shown that they want to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. To be a successful person like Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante, you have to be very confident. Atticus is a very confident man when it comes to him being a lawyer and everything that he does. Atticus shows that he is a very confident person in the Tom Robinson case because in that time period black people like Tom were guilty of any crime that someone accused them of. Atticus had to be precise on what he said and how he said it to try and make the jury think about the case. Atticus is also very confident in everything he does. One thing he does is shoot a rabid dog to save his community and never missed. ââ¬Å"I saw that, One-Shot Finch!! â⬠(97). This quote shows that when Atticus is determined to shoot this dog to save his community that he is so confident that he only has to use one shot to kill the rabid dog. Jaime Escalante is a very confident person especially with his teaching methods and how he pushes his students to succeed. Jaime shows how confident he is with his teaching methods with his students by being one on one with them and teaching them the way they want to be taught and also with their personality. The other teachers tell him that he canââ¬â¢t teach the students college level math and that the students wouldnââ¬â¢t learn it because they were stupid. Jaime was confident and persistent on the students to succeed and to learn at their fullest potential. Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante have both shown that they are very confident in their everyday lives and in their jobs. Successful people tend to be very determined, want to make a difference, and are very confidence with strong personality traits. If all people where like Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante, the world would be a better place to live in. We would have smarter, more educated, and more intelligent people. People would be determined to get things done and not wait till the last minute and not do things. People would want to make a difference not just to be a follower that blends in. They would want to stand out and make a difference for themselves, for their community, for their country, and for the world. These people would have to be confident in what they do and how they do it because the followers and people that blend in would judge them and hopefully follow them. If people would act like Atticus Finch and Jaime Escalante in school, we wouldnââ¬â¢t have to worry about bad things going on in school. We wouldnââ¬â¢t have to be scared about things that come up on a daily basis like drugs, stealing, gangs, fights and things like that. On a larger scale, the world would be perfect. We wouldnââ¬â¢t have so many things to protect us because we would be intelligent enough to not need them. People would be very determined to be better than the next person. People would want to make a difference, and they would have to be very confident because it would take a great amount of time and dedication to become like Atticus Finch or Jaime Escalante. To be a successful person, you have to be determined, have to want to make a difference, and you have to be confident. These three personality traits are what make up great people like Atticus Finch in the book To Kill a Mockingbird and Jaime Escalante in the movie Stand and Deliver, and they truly teach us how a successful person lives.

Macbeth - Downfall Of A Hero :: essays research papers
Macbethââ¬â¢s strive for power affects every aspect of his life, and this motivation eventually leads to his demise. Many different factors play a pivotal role in deciding his ill-fated future. With his wifeââ¬â¢s cajoling, and the three witchesââ¬â¢ foretelling of his future Macbeth, will stop at nothing to gain position as King of Scotland. The witches and their prophecies are the first major influence on Macbethââ¬â¢s actions. Macbeth, Thane of Glamis is content with his position, until the three witches tell him, "hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor, thou shalt be King hereafter." (I, iii.). After hearing this, Macbeth and Banquo, his loyal friend, find out that King Duncan has named Macbeth "Thane of Cawdor." They contemplate about how the rest of the prophecy will come true. The witches also advise them that Banquoââ¬â¢s son would be King one day. Macbeth writes a letter to Lady Macbeth explaining what has happened. Macbeth comes to the realization that for him to in fact become King, he will have to defeat recently named heir to the throne, Malcolm, the Kingââ¬â¢s son, and also prevent Banqouââ¬â¢s son from gaining access to the throne. Macbeth returns home and he and his wife must play host to the King. Lady Macbeth begins to contemplate what "impedes thee from the golden round" (I, v). She desperately wants her Macbeth to be King and she calls upon the "aids of sprits"(I, v) to help her in her quest for the throne. Lady Macbeth requests that the, "sprits that tend on mortal thoughts," to unsex her, and fill her with the "direst crueltyâ⬠¦" (I, v.). The supernatural world will aid her in the hardening of her heart and make it possible for her to carry out her malicious plan. Lady Macbeth wishes to throw out her morality for the sake of gaining a title. With the help of invisible sprits, she wants to make herself able to commit a heinous act of murder to make her dreams of the royal life come true, without having reservations or remorse. She approaches Macbeth with her intent to kill King Duncan. Macbeth, although wanting the prophecy to come true, and become king, lacks the enthusiasm as his wife does, to commit the murder. Lady Macbeth urges Macbeth to act on his desires or he will think of himself as a coward. King Duncan is invited to Macbethââ¬â¢s castle, and it is there that he will be killed.

Market Reserach
Unit 3: Introduction to Marketing Nike Market Research Market research helps Nike to make decisions by helping them to understand the changing dynamics of the market. Market research helps Nike understand who their target market are along with its competitors it has and where they differ. It helps Nike to make improvements, change their business plan or change their product. There are 2 types of market research, these are primary and secondary research. Primary Research Primary Research would be research that Nike have conducted first hand, meaning that Nike have done their own research. This could be internally or externally. If Nike was to do internal primary research they would look at things that are within the organisation. Such as their sales figures to see what products are selling well and in which areas, but also to see what products arenââ¬â¢t selling so well so they can try and improve them. They could also look at the customers data held on Nikes central database. This would be good for Nike as they could contact them customers and ask them what they liked about the products and what they didnââ¬â¢t like to give Nike more of an idea on how they can improve.Nike could also conduct external primary research which is doing primary research outside of the organisation. This could include things like questionnaires and surveys. These would also benefit Nike as they could find out more about what people like about their products and what sort of people they are. Interviews and focus groups are also another part of external primary research. These would be good to Nike as they would be able to see peoplesââ¬â¢ reactions and find out about their product. Secondary ResearchSecondary Research would be Research that Nike have already done before, or research that another organisation would have conducted. This type or research would also be known as ââ¬ËDesk Researchââ¬â¢ as it would normally take place at a desk. This could be helpful to Nike as they could look at a survey which the British Markey Research Borrow conduct (BMRB), such as the National Buying Survey so they can see where it is best for them to sell some of their products. Also these surveys help Nike to find out when they should advertise their television adverts and on what channels they should advertise them on.Quantitative Research Quantitative research relates to numbers and figures that can be analysed mathematically and/or be presented graphically. This can include figures and market values, it can also include customerââ¬â¢s responses. In a questionnaire a quantitative question would be one that gives you a series of answers to choose from, then it can be measured. For example 55% of customers like blue Nike trainers.
